The Joui Army was composed of rebels including Gintoki Sakata, Kotaro Katsura, and Shinsuke Takasugi, who were classmates taught by Shoyo Yoshida. Shoyo was unjustly accused of trying to raise an army, which resulted in his capture, with Gintoki and his friends entering the Joui War to rescue their teacher. During a time in the Joui War when Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi were captured by Tendosho, under orders by Sada Sada, Gintoki was forced to execute his master without any choice before his master's final bidding to him right in front of his comrades' eyes. After his master's death, Gintoki chose to open a freelance business. The war ended not with victory, but with a surrender that saved many lives but left the soldiers branded as traitors or ghosts. Key figures like Katsura and Takasugi survived to continue the struggle from the shadows, while others like Gintoki chose to live quietly amidst the ruins of their ideals.
