• Kondō Isao is roughly based on the historical Kondō Isami, the fourth generation master of Tennen Rishin-ryū and commander of the Shinsengumi.
• The historical Kondō Isami was born Miyagawa Katsugorō to a farmer in Kami-Ishihara village in Musashi Province on November 9, 1834.
• Kondō Isami was beheaded by the executioner Yokokura Kisoji at the Itabashi execution grounds on May 17, 1868.
• Kondō Isami's head was displayed on a pike on Sanjō Ōhashi in Kyoto before being taken by Saitō Hajime and later buried behind the Hozoji temple in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture.
